How ABS is supporting innovation

Overview

The Association of Breast Surgery (ABS), through its Academic and Research Committee (ARC), recognises the importance of supporting innovation, and aims to embrace a culture of ‘No innovation without evaluation’.

ABS aims to have oversight of the development and assessment of innovations across the UK, fostering a collaborative culture of innovation and technique development through shared learning, with patient safety as the underpinning priority.

Registration of Innovation Projects

Alongside badging and endorsement, ABS provides Innovation Registration for projects evaluating novel technologies in breast surgery. Where badging and endorsement support clinical trials, this scheme recognises audits, quality improvement projects, and service evaluations assessing emerging devices, surgical techniques, and digital technologies (including AI).

Reflecting the ABS principle of 'no innovation without evaluation', it offers formal recognition, expert peer review by the Academic and Research Committee, and national visibility - with support available from early concept through to inclusion in the ABS Innovation Registry.

Multicentre collaboration is encouraged, but single-centre projects are welcome, and we'd encourage any member developing or evaluating an innovation to register their project.
