Information about the application process for Educational Bursaries

ABS Educational Bursaries

The ABS offers educational bursaries with the aim of raising the standard of breast care in the UK through supporting the education and training of its members. They can be used for a variety of educational purposes and are at the discretion of the Trustees.

ABS Educational Bursaries Process

UK based Educational Bursaries are for a maximum of £1,000.

International Bursaries are for a maximum of £2,000 (including travel to the UK for overseas members)

Please note:

  • Bursaries will be paid at the discretion of the Trustees.
  • Economy travel and reasonable accommodation only will be reimbursed.
  • No subsistence claims can be paid. 
  • Local travel whilst at the location of the fellowship will not be reimbursed.

Possible uses of the bursaries might include:

  • Visits to the UK or international breast units of good standing to observe/ learn new techniques or practice.
  • Visits to low and middle-income countries to experience perspectives of the management of breast disease in other areas.
  • To support attendance/ presentation at breast focused scientific conferences (e.g. San Antonio, ASCO, ESSO etc.)
  • To support attendance at recognised breast educational meetings (applicants from LMI countries may apply to attend the ABS Conference or an ABS Course. UK based members may not support attendance at an ABS course or event with an ABS fellowship).
  • Other novel or innovative educational initiatives will be considered with an appropriate and detailed application.
  • Applications for bursaries will NOT be considered for examination or degree courses.

  • Educational projects and courses NOT otherwise funded through the usual routes (Trust study leave allocations/ industry grants/ Deanery etc).
  • Membership of the Association of Breast Surgery for a minimum of three months.
  • Clear evidence of a breast special interest/ practice.
  • Agreement to present a report (within three months of completion of the fellowship) of how the award was used, detailing what was learnt and how this applied to future practice.

Applicants will need to complete an application form which will include a personal statement, details of any other source of funding, a detailed breakdown of estimated costs, and a total cost for the proposal. 

The personal statement should detail the project/ initiative and the benefits you will obtain from the bursary and how you will translate these into improving the standard of breast care in your place of work.

Any other sources of funding (e.g. sponsorship/ scholarships) already secured for the same purpose must be declared.

A completed application must be sent with the following documents:

  • A summarised breast focused CV (two pages maximum), detailing attendance at breast meetings, conferences etc over the last two years.
  • A letter of support from an independent referee/ supervisor as to your suitability for this bursary.
  • A letter of invitation from the unit/ institution to be visited, if applicable, showing that approval has been given for the intended programme.

A completed form and supporting documents should be sent to mbartholomew@absgbi.org.uk by the advertised deadline.

ABS Nursing Bursaries Process

In addition to the educational bursaries, ABS Affiliate and Nurse Members can also apply for an additional bursary of up to £500 to support attendance at a recognised breast educational meeting. These bursaries can be used to attend the ABS Conference or an ABS course or event. 

These bursaries are in addition to the ABS Conference bursaries, which are available to those presenting an abstract at the ABS Conference. 

Nursing Educational Bursaries are offered as follows:

  • £1,000 maximum for UK based applications
  • £2,000 maximum for applications for international applications/ involving travel abroad

Possible use of the bursaries might include:

  • Visits to UK or international breast units of good standing to observe or learn about new techniques or practice.
  • To support attendance or presentation at breast focused scientific conferences.
  • To support attendance at recognised breast educational meetings.
  • To support attendance at a course or online educational programme.

Please note: Attendance at ABS courses and events cannot be supported with an ABS bursary.
