Open letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on the regulation of high-risk cosmetic procedures
The Association of Breast Surgery has joined with surgical Royal Colleges, specialist associations and patient safety organisations in calling for stronger protections for patients undergoing cosmetic surgery.
The Association of Breast Surgery is pleased to be a signatory to a joint letter calling for stronger protections for patients undergoing cosmetic surgery.
The letter, signed by surgical Royal Colleges, specialist associations and patient safety organisations, highlights the need to address an important gap in current regulation. At present, it remains legal for any GMC-registered doctor to perform cosmetic surgery, even if they are not recognised as a specialist surgeon and are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register.
ABS supports the call for high-risk cosmetic surgery to be carried out only by appropriately trained specialist surgeons, helping to ensure that patients can make informed decisions and have confidence in the expertise of the professional carrying out their procedure.
