New GIRFT guidance published for gynaecomastia and congenital breast asymmetry surgery
New guides published on Gynaecomastia and Corrective surgery for congenital breast asymmetry
NHS England's Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme has published new guidance setting out clear, evidence-based criteria to support decision-making on surgery for gynaecomastia and the correction of congenital breast asymmetry.
The need for consistent commissioning criteria was highlighted in the GIRFT National Report for Breast Surgery (2021), which identified significant variation in the funding and provision of surgery for both conditions.
The newly published guidance aims to support clinicians, providers, commissioners and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) in determining which patients may be appropriate for surgery and which may not, helping to promote a more consistent approach to care.
The guidance has been developed collaboratively and is co-badged by the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS), the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).
We encourage our members to review the guidance and consider its application within local pathways and decision-making processes.
