New BCIR record type for historic and cosmetic tourism patients

A new record type has been added to the Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry (BCIR) to capture implant details for historic patients and cosmetic tourism patients whose devices are not currently recorded.
 
This applies in the following circumstances:

• The device was implanted in the UK before the BCIR commenced (historic patient).
• The device was implanted in the UK but was not captured by the registry at the time (historic patient).

A record can be created even where the patient is not undergoing a new surgical procedure. For example, a patient may attend a clinic for an unrelated matter and request that their existing device be added to the registry.

The data entry process for this record type is similar to that used for new patients. However, unlike new patient records, it is not necessary to have complete implant details available at the time of entry.

Where full implant information is unknown, the patient can still be recorded provided the manufacturer can be identified. This ensures the patient can be contacted, if necessary, for example in the event of a product recall or safety notification.

Clinicians and staff are encouraged to make use of this new record type where relevant, to help build as complete a picture as possible of implant history across all patient groups.
