Paterson Inquiry

The Association of Breast Surgery welcomes the announcement of an Inquiry into the issues raised by the Paterson case.

This will focus on the quality of care offered to private patients as well as how clinical responsibility and accountability are managed  in the independent sector and information shared with the NHS. Ian Paterson was a breast surgeon able to prosper due to weak independent sector governance. Whilst ABS can advise on breast specific lessons to be learnt, review and reform of private practice governance is a generic not breast specific issue. The ABS hopes that lessons can be learnt and that relevant governance changes are made so that patients are protected from any similar event happening in the future.
