Professor Carlo Palmieri graduated in anatomy and medicine from the University of London, later obtaining a PhD at Imperial College London. Prior to joining The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Professor Palmieri held the position of a senior Lecturer within the department of Cancer at Imperial College London and was a Consultant in Medical Oncology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and was awarded a prestigious Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist fellowship. As an active campaigner for raising awareness nationally of metastatic breast cancer (MBC), Professor Palmieri has appeared on national TV and radio including the BBC.
Working as a Medical Oncologist specialising in breast cancer, Professor Palmieri focuses his academic and clinical interests on endocrine therapy breast cancer, and in particular targeting the androgen receptor as well brain metastases secondary to breast cancer.
He is actively involved in developing and initiating translational and clinical research trials and is currently leading a number of studies including focused on brain metastasis including one investigating the use of cell free DNA within cerebrospinal fluid as well as neoadjuvant study investigating endocrine therapy in combination with palbociclib, trastuzumab and tucatinib in ER-positive, PgR-positive and HER2-positive breast cancer (3-PILLARS) and real world data studies. Following on from co-leading CCP-UK CANCER a national NIHR URI funded project which characterised COVID-19 in cancer patients, along with infectious disease colleagues they are working with the Secure Anonymised Information linkage (SAIL) Databank, in Wales to look at the impact of COVID in Welsh cancer patients.
He co-chairs the breast group for the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance, and is a member of the UK Breast Cancer Clinical Studies Group, and co-chairs Metastatic breast cancer. He has previously been a member of the NHS England Genomics Clinical Reference Group and expert cancer member of Department of Health's independent advisory group on use of antibodies/antiviral drugs in patients vulnerable to COVID-19.
He is the patient public involvement lead for the Liverpool Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC). As a member of Breast International Group brain metastasis working group he is involved in developing studies for brain metastases at international level. He is actively involved in undergraduate teaching and is the speciality lead for oncology for the University to Liverpool Medical School and established the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) scheme for medical oncology in Merseyside.
He co-developed and established the first ever UK meeting for patients with metastatic breast cancer. The first ‘secondary breast cancer summit’ saw 100 women and men living with SBC were hosed in Liverpool in July 2024, for 2 days of talks and networking, with around 400 people attending on line. All places were fully funded, and the second one is due to take place in June 2025.
Alongside this he has co-developed and edited the book, ‘ABC of Cancer Care’ aimed at non-specialists and students, outlining the current management of cancer as well as explaining issues around survivorship and clinical trials. The second edition is currently being developed.
