The Second Mammary Fold Academic & Research Day

The second Mammary Fold Academic and Research day was held on the 10th February 2017 in Birmingham and was a great success.

A key component of the day was the breast surgery collaborative project session, which gave trainees that are steering collaborative projects the opportunity to present their data and recruit trainees from other regions to on-going and future studies. Miss Lynda Wyld’s keynote presentation was titled ‘The trials and tribulations of breast cancer research’. The insightful talk highlighted the challenges faced by breast surgeons and trainees who are undertaking research, as well as significant benefits a career in research offers. We had oral and poster presentations from trainees ranging from Foundation Year doctors to Specialty Training registrars.

Edward St John won the oral presentation prize for his innovative work on utilising mass spectrometry to analyse diathermy fumes and evaluate oncological margins.

The event was well-attended by trainees and consultants and provided a valuable platform to highlight their breast surgery research projects. We very much look forward to seeing you at next year’s meeting.
