Communication in the Metastatic Setting – ½ Day Workshop

Approximately 70% of patients with advanced breast cancer develop metastatic bone disease (MBD). The consequences of this, in addition to the emotional burden of having an increasing threat to life, are significant.

Day One

12.30 – 13.15 - “Your cancer has spread to the bone”: challenges when communicating about metastatic breast cancer,” Dr Fatima Cardoso, Director Breast Unit, Champalimaud Clinical Center

13.15 - 14.00 - Lunch

14.00 – 15.15 - Introduction to the workshop /Primary communication problems encountered in clinic, Professor Dame Lesley Fallowfield & Professor Luzia Travado

15.15 – 15.30 - Tea

15.30 – 17.30 - Interactive sessions (in smaller groups)

(1) Handling unexpected news of MBD in patient diagnosed originally with low risk disease

(2) Handling prognosis and expectations in a patient with multiple metastases

17.45 – 18.30 - Summary & Evaluation

19:00 – 20:30 - Supper and networking
